DESCRIPTION
This course provides an introductory overview of the representations of the contact and nature of interactions between "Islam" and "the West," as they are expressed through the medium of cinema. Films that will be viewed are productions of a wide geography, ranging from Hollywood to the Eastern Mediterranean. The cinematic sources will be approached in two distinct manners. Half of the viewings will be followed by a historiographical discussion about the topic at hand while the other half of the films will be approached from a cinematographic perspective that calls for critical engagement with the production on the part of the student audience.
